At HomeschoolUs, we have created an online resource for home-schoolers and families interested in homeschooling which we hope will provide information, support and encouragement.
Homeschooling has been part of the history of the United States since its founding. During colonial times, children were always schooled at home. Later in our country's history, communities and states began to establish schools supported by government funds. These schools were still primarily Bible based as were the early schools at home. In the late 1800's states began to enact compulsory attendance laws. The main force behind this movement was the belief the the state had an interest in ensuring that all citizens had a equal opportunity to recieve a quality education. Although in the early stages, these schools continued to be based on Biblical teachings, many families were concerned that state governments were attempting to erode the authority of the family.
In the early 1960's the Supreme Court passed down several decisions which would cause many families to consider schooling their children at home. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it was a violation of the United States Constitution to pray, read the Bible or to post the Ten Commandments on public school property. Many families found this decision to be in direct conflict with their beliefs. In addition, the public schools began promoting humanism, evolution and other anti-Christian doctines. In reaction, many families turned to homeschooling or to the many private Christian and Catholic schools which were growing in popularity.
Today, families choose to homeschoool for a variety of reasons. The primary reason continues to be a desire to pass down the Christian values they hold dear. Some parents teach their children at home in order to give them a better education than the public schools can provide, to assist a child who is having difficulty learning in a traditional setting, giving a gifted child a chance to exel, or to have the opportunity to travel. The reasons parents choose to homeschool are as varied as the families themselves.
The homeschooling movement is growing more rapidly than at any other time in the history of the United States, with the number of homeschooling families estimated to be over one million. Homeschooling families use a variety of methods to educate their children. Five of the main methods are Traditional, Unit Studies, Charlotte Mason, Classical and Unschooling. In this site we will explore each method in detail. Come join us on our homeschooling adventure!
